There has been an increase in the number of mountain gorillas in Uganda’s Bwindi forest Gorilla Park. A joint team of researchers, rangers, and conservationists from the three gorilla destinations of Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo carried out a mountain gorilla survey/census in 2018. This exercise was done to ascertain the number of gorillas inhabiting Bwindi forest gorilla park the other parks in Virunga comprising of Mgahinga, volcanoes, and Virunga national parks.
Mountain Gorillas in Bwindi Forest
The gorilla survey carried out in Bwindi was combined with that of Sarabwe wildlife reserve which has an extensive forest spanning the mountains of Uganda and that of the democratic republic of Congo. This was motivated by the fact that at times gorilla families based in Bwindi Impenetrable forest national park at times find themselves in Sarambwe wildlife reserve and thus including it in the census was very necessary.
The census conducted in Bwindi was done in tow phase in the months of October and March. The researchers were also divided into 12 teams with only six people and only in only three camps who were always responsible for monitoring the forested parks. The well re-known researcher Dr. Winnie Eckardt who works with Diane Fossey fund with other researchers from the three destination countries mapped out and dis the research in the first phase which was done in March.
The gorilla survey involved observing the movement pattern of gorillas, the encroachment activities while getting evidence, and also the about of their animals residing within the park. This was done by closely following the trails used by the gorillas as they wonder to look for food and material for constructing nests where they sleep.
After this was concluded, the results from the other gorilla national parks were also brought and merged and came to a clear conclusion of how many mountain gorillas are in the whole in the world.
The survey identified some of the habituated gorilla families in Bwindi which were identified and Katwe, Kyaguriko, Kahungye, Mubare, Mishya, Nkirongo, Origoza, Busingye, Habiyanja, Bushawo, and Rushegula. These mountain gorillas are available by visitors who wish to see and track them. However, it was also pointed out by the survey that most of the gorilla families are not habituated and some have been reserved for research.
