Trekking chimpanzees of Kyambura Gorge 2027: Kyambura Gorge is one of the places in Uganda where tourists can meet chimpanzees. This valley of apes was established in 1965 to protect the different attractions that were there at the time. The top attractions in this gorge are the chimpanzees, which are the closest relatives to human beings, with more than 99% DNA shared with human beings.

Kyambura Gorge is one of the best areas where tourists can see habituated chimpanzees on a safari to Uganda. Tourists gather at the gorge offices where they are briefed about the rules and regulations of the activity.  A maximum of 8 people trek the one chimpanzee troop in Kyambura per session, and these must all be aged 15 years and above.

Armed ranger guides lead the trekkers in the jungle, where they start to search for the chimpanzees. The search goes down the gorge using different trails, allowing trekkers to meet forest birds, mammals, and primates. It takes a few hours to locate the chimpanzees because the gorge is small, and as soon as they are spotted, trekkers get 1 hour around the members, which allows them to learn about their habits, take photos, and watch members carry out daily activities like nesting, hunting, playing, and breastfeeding, among others.

The cost of chimpanzee trekking in Kyambura Gorge in 2027

Trekking chimpanzees of Kyambura Gorge requires one to have a chimpanzee trekking permit, which is issued by Uganda Wildlife Authority. They are sold at the UWA headquarters in Kamwokya to persons above 12 years. 2027, the permits for Kyambura will be going for $200 for foreign non-residents, $150 for foreign residents, $100 for the rest of Africa, and UGX50,000 for citizens of East African Member States.

Kyambura Gorge has a total of 16 permits per day, 8 of which are for trekkers in the morning and 8 are for trekkers in the afternoon. Tourists who are interested in seeing the chimpanzees of this gorge are asked to book early, 6 months or even more, to avoid last-minute bookings, as these permits sell out quickly. Tourists must use licensed tour operators to purchase chimpanzee permits for Kyambura Gorge.

When is the best time to visit the Kyambura Gorge?

Kyambura Gorge, being a deep valley, is best visited during the dry season, which occurs from June to September and December to February. These months have little or no rainfall, which keeps the walking trails dry and easier to pass through. The vegetation is short, giving good views of the forest attractions and the chimpanzees.

Tourists may also visit Kyambura Gorge during the rainy season from March to March and October to November. The park will be open for trekking activities; however, tourists should be aware of the excessive rainfall and little sunshine. The trekking trails will be muddy and slippery, making it difficult to walk around the gorge. The vegetation will be tall with unclear views of the chimpanzees and other attractions within the gorge.
