Activities to do in Kyambura gorge: Kyambura gorge is a sunken hidden tropical rainforest area on the western side of Queen Elizabeth national park. Queen Elizabeth national park is located in the southwestern part of Uganda in Kasese, Rubirizi, Kamwenge, and Rukungiri districts. Kyambura gore is situated in Kyambura game reserve in a deep valley that is 100 meters deep and 156 sq. km large.

Kyambura gorge is the only area within Queen Elizabeth national park where chimpanzees have been habituated and they have really made the area famous. Tourists that are visiting Queen Elizabeth national park should always take visit to Kyambura gorge because it offers different activities as it’s filled with several attractions inside the forest.

Encounter chimpanzees

This is the main activity done in Kyambura gorge as it’s the only area within the park where chimpanzees have been habituated. Chimpanzee trekking here is done in the morning and evening hours by those that have chimpanzee trekking permits. The chimpanzee permits are sold to people that are above the age of 12 years at Uganda wildlife authority.

Chimpanzee trekking is a guided activity in Kyambura gorge and it’s led by armed ranger guides whose role is to take you to where the chimpanzees could be and even protect you from dangerous wild animals. The search for chimpanzees takes 30 minutes to 3 hours within this gorge and the time taken usually depends on the location of the apes as well as the speed of trekkers.

During the search for chimpanzees, trekkers do get an opportunity to meet different wildlife species that live within the forest. The moment the chimpanzees are found, trekkers do keep the rules and regulations of the activity and be around them for 1 hour. Best time to visit Kyambura gorge

The dry months from June to September and December to February are the best time to visit Kyambura gorge and this is because they have little or no rainfall. The trekking trails are dry and easily passable, vegetation is short and scattered giving good views of the wildlife and the roads leading to the gorge are in good condition.

Travelers can also take a visit to Kyambura gorge during the rainy season and this is good for budget travelers because the lodges are at a discount. Accessing Kyambura gorge

Kyambura gorge is located on the western side of Queen Elizabeth national park and it can be accessed within a single day using air transport or road transport as shown below

Accessing Kyambura gorge by road transport: tourists can move from Kampala/Entebbe drive through Masaka, Mbarara, Bushenyi, and Rubirizi to the park where they will drive through Katunguru road to Kyambura gorge. The other route is from Kampala via Mityana, Mubende, Fort Portal, and Kasese to the park.

Accessing Kyambura gorge by air transport: luxury travelers or those that don’t like traveling for long distances can access Kyambura gorge by using chattered flights from Aerolink Uganda and bar aviation Uganda. These companies have flights every day from Kajjansi airstrip and Entebbe international airport to Mweya airstrip inside the park. From Mweya to Kyambura gorge or your booked accommodation facilities will be a few minutes or less than an hour.
