Getting to Mgahinga national park by Air: The best option for getting to Mgahinga national park is to fly into Kisoro airstrip which is located about 14 km away. Mgahinga national park is located in the extreme of southwestern Uganda and the nearest airport to use is Kisoro airstrip. Mgahinga national park is located 9 to 10 hours drive by road from Entebbe/Kampala and in the minds of some travelers that is a very long and tiresome journey so they end up using scheduled flights. Flights to Kisoro airstrip are the easiest way to get to Mgahinga national park in a short period of time. It takes 1 hour and 25 minutes for a flight from Entebbe/Kampala to land at Kisoro airstrip.

Flights start from Kajjansi airstrip or Entebbe international airport every day in the morning hours. Flights to Kisoro airstrip take 1 hour and 25 minutes and travelers use road transport to the park which takes 1 to 2 hours based on the nature of the roads.

Travelers can visit Mgahinga national park by air at any time of the year however certain months are better than the rest. The dry season months are the best to fly to Mgahinga national park because they are characterized by little or no rainfall. June to September and December to February are the best periods because of the good weather conditions.

Flights to Kisoro airstrip are not delayed because the skies are clear, roads from the airstrip are dry and in good condition, vegetation inside the park is short and scattered with good views of wildlife, and the trekking trails are dry and easier to navigate. The dry season is so good attracting a huge number of tourists to the park.

Tourists can still fly to Mgahinga Gorilla park during the rainy season because the park is open and the flight companies still work. The rainy season happens from March to May and October to November when the country is receiving heavy rainfall most of the days. Too much rainfall in the rainy season delays flights, trekking trails are muddy and slippery, vegetation is tall with unclear views of wildlife, and roads connecting to the park are muddy.

Mountain gorilla trekking

This is the most popular activity carried out by tourists in Mgahinga national park. Mountain gorilla trekking in Mgahinga national park is done every morning by tourists who have gorilla trekking permits. Nyakagezi is the only mountain gorilla family available for trekking on your flying to Mgahinga national park

On the morning of trekking, very early tourists move to Ntebeko Visitors Centre where they get briefed about the rules and regulations of the activity. After the briefing, the trekkers are given armed ranger guides to lead them into the jungle where they start searching for mountain gorillas.

The search goes for 2 to 7 hours but finally, the trekkers meet the mountain gorillas. When the apes are found, trekkers are given 1 hour to be around the members which give them an opportunity to learn about their habits, take photos and watch them carry out daily activities like nesting, hunting, coupling, eating, and many more.

Golden monkey trekking

In the whole country Uganda, golden monkeys are found in only Mgahinga national park. If you get a chance to visit Mgahinga then don’t leave minus trekking with golden monkeys. They are very beautiful monkey species that love to stay in the bamboo vegetation cover which is also part of their food diet.

Tourists do encounter a golden monkey family for a maximum of 1 hour and they are able to see the members carry out daily activities, learn about their habits and capture as many images as they can. One must have a golden monkey permit from Uganda Wildlife Authority if one wants to be part of the golden monkey trekking team.

Batwa community visit.

For travelers that love to explore the African culture, visiting the Batwa people should e a must because they are some of the best African cultures to see on an African safari. Batwa were forest dwellers but they now live at the park boundaries where they are trying to get used to the African culture. By visiting the Batwa people, you will be able to learn about their life in the jungle, life today, and you will get entertained by traditional dancers.

Birding watching

Mgahinga national park as small as it is hosts 180 bird species 14 of which are endemic to the Albertine rift region. On a birding exercise in Mgahinga national park, tourists will be able to encounter bird species such as dusky crismsonwing, Kivu ground thrush, handsome francolin, blue-headed weaver, regal sunbird, archer’s robin chat, Rwenzori batis, blue-headed sunbird, dusky turtle dove, strange weaver, lagden’s bushshrike, brown crowned tchagra, white-eyed slaty flycatcher, black kite, red-billed fire finch, banded prinia, chubb’s cisticola, grey capped warbler, Kivu ground thrush, and Rwenzori turaco among others.
