Kyambura gorge is a forested area located on the eastern side of Queen Elizabeth national park and Queen Elizabeth national park is found in the western part of Uganda in Kasese, Rubirizi, Rukungiri, and Kamwenge Kyambura gorge is home to various wildlife species but the famous are the endangered chimpanzees. Over 100 chimpanzees are said to be living in Kyambura gorge and some of these have been habituated for tourism activities.
One of the questions asked by tourists that are intending to visit Kyambura gorge for chimpanzee trekking is how many chimpanzee trekking permits are available. A chimpanzee trekking permit is a document issued by Uganda Wildlife Authority to enable a tourist above the age of 12 years to be part of the chimpanzee trekking activity and spend 1 hour with the endangered primates.
How many permits are available in Kyambura gorge everyday?
There are currently 16 permits available in Kyambura gorge every day. 8 permits are used in the morning and 8 are used in the evening. Kyambura gorge is home to only 1 habituated chimpanzee family which is trekked by a maximum number of 8 people per session.

How to book Kyambura gorge chimpanzee permits
By yourself
Tourists that are organizing a safari to Queen Elizabeth national park by themselves can book the chimpanzee trekking permits directly from Uganda Wildlife Authority. One would need the dates of the month and year they will travel to contact the reservations office at Uganda Wildlife Authority about the availability of the permits.
If the chimpanzee permits are still available, you will be sent an email containing the different prices of the permits and you will choose your category. You will use the sent banking details to send money for your permit and later you will have to send a scanned copy of the receipt of payments for your permit to be booked.
Using a local tour operator
Assuming that you have already got Africa Adventure Vacation as your local tour operator for your safari to Uganda. You will send us the dates of the month and year you want to travel and we shall use these to check for the availability of the permits with Uganda Wildlife Authority.
If we find the chimpanzee permits available, we do send you an email containing the different banking details and the cost of the permits which you use to send money. After you email us a scanned copy of the receipt together with your passport details for your permit to be booked.

Chimpanzee trekking in Kyambura gorge is currently done in two sessions that is morning and afternoon. Both sessions start with a briefing where trekkers are taught about the rules and regulations of trekking activity. Armed ranger guides do lead trekkers in the jungle to search for where the chimpanzees could be.
To find chimpanzees in the deep valley of Kyambura gorge takes 30 minutes to 3 hours and time depends on the location of the chimpanzees as well as the speed of trekkers. While searching, tourists are able to meet different mammals, primates, and bird species. The moment chimpanzees are located, tourists are given 1 hour to be around chimpanzees, watch them do daily activities, learn about their habits and take photos among others.
