29 Mar Location of Lake Mburo national park Location of Lake Mburo national park: Lake Mburo national park is located in Kiruhura district of Uganda. The national park is located close to the highway that connects Kampala/Entebbe to most of the parks in the southwestern and western parts of Uganda. Lake Mburo national park is located about 4 to 5 hours’ drive from the capital of Kampala and Entebbe. The park is located about 240km by road west of Kampala and 65km by road east of Mbarara. To get to Lake Mburo national park you do drive to Lyantonde and use two entry points which are Nshara gate and Sanga gate in Lyantonde district. Lake Mburo is the closest protected area located near the capital city of Kampala. This is because a person takes 4 to 5 hours to access this area while other parks take 6 hours and even more. Road transport is the main option for you to get to Lake Mburo national park as there are no airstrips inside or around the park boundaries. To get to the location of Lake Mburo national park, you use road transport. From Kampala/Entebbe, you drive through Masaka, Mpigi, Lyantonde, and then branch off to the park. From Lyantonde, you can use any of the two gates which are Nshara gate and Sanga gate to get to the park. There is a category of tourists that don’t want to travel for hours on the road and this means that they will have to use Mbarara airstrip. Mbarara airstrip is located not very far from Lake Mburo national park and tourists who fly there will have to use road transport to access the park. To fly to Mbarara airstrip, you must book earlier with any of the airline companies which could be Bar Aviation Uganda and Aerolink Uganda. These companies have daily flights from Entebbe international airport and Kajjansi airstrip to most of the airstrips in the country. Flights take a few hours and save one from the long distance travel. Lake Mburo national park covers a total area of 260 sq. km in Nyabushozi Kiruhura district. The national park harbors over 68 mammals, 3 primates, 350 bird species and has over 14 small lakes. Elands, impalas, and klipspringers are some of the animals you will see in Lake Mburo national park but not in other savanna parks in the country. Lake Mburo national park is also one of the few areas to find zebras with the highest population living here. Tourists who visit Lake Mburo national park can see different attractions by taking part in activities such as game drives, horse riding, guided nature walks, and boat cruises among others. Activities in Lake Mburo national park Mammals and primates: The land of Lake Mburo national park harbors over 68 mammal species and 3 primate species. The national park comprises savannah vegetation which is the main food for most of the animals within the park. The safari to the park offers stunning sights of mammals and primates to include zebras, giraffes, side stripped jackals, lion, olive baboons, leopards, spotted hyenas, hippos, crocodiles, black and white colobus monkeys, buffaloes, topis, vervet monkeys, waterbucks, elands, impalas, sitatungas, warthogs, and giant forest hogs among others. Birds: Lake Mburo national park is one of the birding destinations in Uganda with over 350 bird species. The national park has birds living in the Rubanga forest, along the shores of Lake Mburo and other vegetated areas of the park. Some of the birds of Lake Mburo include red faced barbet, shoebill stork, grey crowned crane, greater painted snipe, African wattled lapwing, saddle-billed stork, blacked bellied bustard, papyrus gonolek, blue-headed coucal, African scops owl, papyrus yellow warbler, yellow-rumped tinkerbird, southern ground hornbill, mosque swallow and hairy breasted barbet among others. Lake Mburo: Lake Mburo is the largest freshwater lake found inside Lake Mburo national park. The lake is used for boat cruise activities and sport fishing. Tourists who want to relax from tiresome activities and those that want to explore Lake Mburo can go for boat cruise activities that happen in the morning and afternoon activities.
