Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge: Located in Nkuringo sector of Bwindi impenetrable forest national park, Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge is one of the places you need to stay on your gorilla safari in Nkuringo and Rushaga sector. The lodge is located in Nkuringo region where both gorilla trekking and gorilla habituation are done. Nkuringo is famous for being home to mountain gorillas and 3 gorilla families are found in this region. Bushaho gorilla family is one for trekking in this region while Nkuringo and Christmas gorilla families are open for trekking purposes.

Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge is built at the top of the hill overlooking Bwindi impenetrable forest at an altitude of 2161 meters above sea level. The lodge is a perfect place to stay especially if you are trekking mountain gorillas in Nkuringo region because it is located just 5 minutes’ drive from the briefing point of this sector.

Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge is made out of local material with papyrus and the floors are made of wood with a touch of volcanic rock. Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge comprises 12 cottages and the main lodge which has a gift shop, a restaurant with local and international dishes prepared by well-trained chefs, a coffee shop, and a bar with soft and hard drinks. The lodge has 6 Virunga terrace rooms that have en suite bathrooms and terrace, 4 private garden cottages which have a veranda and a fireplace, and one two-bedroom villa good for groups or families.

Gorilla trekking

Most of the travelers that are staying at Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge participate in gorilla trekking which is done in Bwindi impenetrable forest national park. Travelers that are to go for gorilla trekking must wake up early in the morning and then have breakfast. They will meet their driver guide to transfer them to the sector offices where they will meet other trekkers.

Bushaho gorilla family and Bushaho gorilla family are the two mountain gorilla families that have been put in place for gorilla habituation purposes. The gorilla habituation experience is done for those that want to spend more than 1 hour with mountain gorillas. Gorilla habituation is done by 4 trekkers that are accompanied by researchers, conservationists, and armed ranger guides. When the trekkers meet the mountain gorillas, they are given 4 hours to be with these apes and be part of the activities that make mountain gorillas get used to human presence around them.

Birding

Guests staying at Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge can take part in birding activities that are done around the lodge or inside the park. The birding activities are guided by armed ranger guides that know the best trails to use and they do protect you from dangerous wild animals. Birds to look out for include black kite, African fish eagle, palm nut vulture, purple heron, cattle egret, little grebe, southern pochard, sacred ibis, brown snake eagle, northern pin tail, marabous stork, hadada ibis, African harrier hawk, shikra,  lizard buzzard, augur buzzard, African hobby, peregrine falcon, scaly francolin, and red-eyed dove among others.

Nature walk activities are guided by armed ranger guides who take you around the different trails showing protecting you from dangerous wild animals. The nature walks enable tourists to encounter different park animals such as buffaloes, elephants, duikers, giant forest hogs, bush pigs, monkeys, olive baboons, birds, and different bird species.

The Batwa are initial habitats of Bwindi impenetrable forest national park that used to stay in this jungle feeding on meat from small animals, fruits, and honey. The Batwa people were evicted out of the jungle in 1991 by the government which needed to protect the mountain gorillas. They decided to settle around the park where you can go and watch them do daily activities, listen to stories of long ago, taste their local food, visit their businesses, and then get entertained by the traditional dancers.

Travelers can book and stay at Nkuringo Bwindi Lodge at any time of the year however there are months that are better than the rest. The dry months from June to September and December to February are the best to stay at Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge and visit Bwindi impenetrable forest national park because, during these months, there is little or no rainfall that keeps the trekking trails dry, the vegetation is short and thin with good views of the animals inside the park and around the lodge and the roads leading to the ark are in good conditions.

The rainy season happens from March to May and October to November and travelers should know that during this season, there is plenty of rainfall that makes the trekking trails muddy and slippery, the vegetation is tall and thick with unclear views of animals around the park and the lodge while the roads leading to the park and lodge are impassable.
