Trekking Nshongi gorilla family
Trekking Nshongi gorilla family: Nshongi gorilla group is one of the 19 fully habituated mountain gorilla families that are found in Bwindi gorilla park. Nshongi gorilla family can be found in Rushaga sector that is found in the southern sector of Bwindi gorilla park. Bwindi gorilla park is the most famous gorilla park with the highest population of mountain gorillas in the world. The park is located in the southwestern part of the country harboring 10 primate species, 120 mammals, and 350 bird species.
Nshongi gorilla family started its habituation process in 2006 and was open for tourism purposes in 2009. A year after habituation, Mishaya was the first to break up from the group and left with 10 members to form his own group that was named after his name. In 2013 another silverback Bweza left the group with 18 members leaving Nshongi with only 7 individuals. As of today, the members of Nshongi gorilla group keep on changing due to new deaths, births, as well as members leaving and entering the group.
The group was named Nshongi because it was first sighted on River Nshongi that passes through the park by the rangers of the park. Nshongi gorilla group is still the biggest family to be habituated in Bwindi gorilla park. At the time of habituation, the family had 32 members but the members kept reducing as some of the silverbacks in the group fought and left the group with some members.

Just like trekking any other gorilla families on the day of trekking, all the trekkers must gather at the briefing point where they listen to the rules and regulations red by the park wardens. The trekkers are grouped into 8 and each group treks a single gorilla group. Travelers that want to trek Nshongi gorilla group will be allocated that group because the tour operators would have informed the wardens.
Armed ranger guides lead the treks in Bwindi gorilla park, they take you through different trekking trails till you meet the gorilla family you have been looking for. To find Nshongi gorilla family can take you 2-7 hours depending on the location of the gorillas as well as the speed of trekkers. The trekkers must keep the rules and regulations of trekking activity before and after trekking the gorilla group. When Nshongi gorilla group is located, the trekkers are allowed to be around it for 1 hour, watch the members do daily activities, take photos and learn about their habits.

Nshongi gorilla family can be trekked by only 8 people and these must be 15 years and above according to the Uganda Wildlife Authority. All the people to trek Nshongi gorilla group must have gorilla trekking permits and these are sold at Uganda Wildlife Authority at a fee of $700 for foreign non-residents, $600 for foreign residents, and UGX250,000 East African citizens. The gorilla trekking permit fees include park entrance fees, ranger guide fees, and exclude accommodation and transport.

Nshongi gorilla family can be trekked by a group of 8 people and so you need to book the permits in advance before they sell out. Gorilla trekking permits for Nshongi gorilla family can be booked in advance using a trusted local tour operator or direct from the Uganda Wildlife Authority. To book the gorilla trekking permit for Nshongi gorilla group , you will have to send any of the above an email containing the gorilla family you want to trek which is Nshongi, the dates of the month, and the year you want to travel.
They will use this information to check if the permits are available and once they are available, they will send you an email containing the banking details for you to send the money and they book the permits for you. Travelers are advised to always book their trekking permits in advance of 3-4 months so as to avoid inconveniences

During these rainy seasons, there is plenty of rainfall that makes the trekking trails muddy and slippery, the vegetation is tall with unclear views of the gorillas and the roads leading to the sector are in poor conditions.
