Ruhija gorilla permits: Ruhija Gorilla permits are cards issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority to allow travelers to trek mountain gorillas in the region and stay around them for one hour. Gorilla trekking is the main activity that is done in the Rujiha region located on the eastern side of the park and it’s done on 4 gorilla families that have been fully habituated in the park. The sector is home to 4 mountain gorilla families which can be trekked at any time of the year and these are Mukiza, Oruzogo, Nitukura, and Kyaguliro.
Ruhija sector is one of the sectors of Bwindi impenetrable forest home to more than half of the mountain gorilla population in the whole world. The national park is found in the southwestern part of the country and comprises thick vegetation cover that acts as a home to mountain gorillas. The mountain gorillas in Bwindi do live in Ruhija sector, Nkuringo sector, Rushaga sector, and Buhoma sector.
Booking gorilla permits for Ruhija sector
Travelers intending to trek mountain gorillas in the Ruhija sector must book gorilla trekking permits so as to be allowed to be part of the gorilla trekking activity. The Ruhija gorilla permits can be got from a trusted local tour operator or direct from the Uganda Wildlife Authority a body that controls and manages the park.
Using a local tour operator

Directly from the Uganda Wildlife Authority
Travelers can now book Ruhija gorilla permits directly from the Uganda Wildlife Authority which is a government body that manages the park. Uganda wildlife authority is the one that issues permits for all the sectors of Bwindi including Ruhija. To book gorilla permits for Ruhija you will have to contact the reservations office via email and the information should include Ruhija as the sector you want to trek mountain gorillas, dates of the month, and year you want to trek gorillas.
This information shall be used to check for the availability of gorilla permits for the Ruhija region. Once the permits are available, you will be sent an email containing the cost of each permit and the different banking details. In case they are done, you will be asked to choose a different case but this is very rare. To secure a Ruhija gorilla permit, you will have to send money for the permit and that is when the Uganda Wildlife Authority will book it for you and you will pick it up at the offices on the day of arrival.
How much is each gorilla permit for Ruhija sector?
Gorilla trekking is the main activity that is done in the Ruhija sector of Bwindi impenetrable forest national park. To be part of this once in a lifetime activity, you need to have a gorilla permit that is issued by Uganda Wildlife Authority. Each gorilla trekking permit costs $700 for foreign non-residents, $600 for foreign residents, and UGX250,000 citizens of East Africa.
When to book Ruhija gorilla permit?
Ruhija gorilla permits can be booked at any time of the year before arriving in the country for the safari but it’s very important to book your gorilla permit at least 3-4 months in advance so that you be assured of your spot. Early booking is advised especially for those that are intending to visit the park in the high season of June to September and December to February. The gorilla trekking permits for Ruhija sector are sold by Uganda Wildlife Authority on a first come first serve basis.
How many gorilla permits are in Ruhija sector?
There are 4 gorilla families in the Ruhija sector of Bwindi. Each of the mountain gorilla families in Ruhija is trekked by a maximum number of 8 people and this brings the total number of mountain gorilla permits in Ruhija sector to 32 permits. there are only 32 Ruhija gorilla permits in the region on a daily basis. These Ruhija gorilla permits are available at the Uganda Wildlife Authority every day.
Gorilla trekking in the Ruhija sector?
Gorilla trekking in Ruhija sector is carried out by four mountain gorilla families that are Oruzogo group, Mukiza group, Kyaguliro group, and Bitukura group. The gorilla trekking in Ruhija sector starts early in the morning and so tourists are expected to be at the briefing point early in the morning. They will be briefed by park wardens about the rules and regulations of the gorilla trekking activity, the grouping will be done and armed ranger guides lead the treks.
To locate the mountain gorilla family in Bwindi, takes 2-7 hours and this depends on the location of the gorilla family and the speed of the trekkers. During the search for the gorilla group assigned, the trekkers are able to encounter different park mammals, primates, birds, and different plant species. When the gorilla family is located, the trekkers are given 1 hour to be around the gorillas, watch them do daily activities like hunt, eat, make nests, breastfeed, groom, and much more. The trekkers will be able to learn about the mountain gorilla behaviors, take photos, and record videos.
Best time to visit Ruhija sector
Ruhija sector of Bwindi can be visited all throughout the year but there are months that are better than the rest. The dry months that occur from June to September and December to February are the best to visit Ruhija sector because they are characterized by little or no rainfall that leaves the trekking trails dry, the vegetation is short and thin with good views of the mountain gorillas, photography is very good and the roads leading to the park are in good conditions.
Travelers can still visit Ruhija sector for gorilla trekking in the rainy season of March to May and October to November to enjoy huge discounts on accommodation facilities. The lodges do give discounts to attract customers because travelers are very few in the park during the low season. Travelers should note that during the rainy season, there is plenty of rainfall that makes the trekking trails muddy and slippery, the vegetation is tall and thick with unclear views of the mountain gorillas, the trekking trails are muddy and slippery while the roads leading to the park are in bad conditions.
