Things to do in Ziwa rhino sanctuary: Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary in Nakasongola district is a 70 sq. km piece of land gazetted to protect southern white rhinos. Ziwa was established in 2002 after the reintroduction of rhinos from Kenya. The sanctuary is the only place in Uganda where tourists can encounter white rhinos in their natural habitat. Uganda Wildlife Authority is working hand in hand with Ziwa Rhino and Wildlife Ranchers Limited to protect these endangered white rhinos.

Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is not only a home to the white rhinos but also mammals, primates, and birds. There are numerous activities that tourists can do while on a safari in Ziwa. All the activities organized in the park enable tourists to encounter different attractions found there.

Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is so far the only home to see the southern white rhinos in Uganda. On a visit to the country, tourists who are interested in seeing these animals can visit Ziwa and get an opportunity to see them in their natural habitat. There are more than 33 white rhinos on this ranch and tourists have a 100% chance of seeing these animals in the wild.

Rhino tracking at Ziwa is an activity done on foot because the area is not so large and free from dangerous animals. The armed ranger guides take tourists around the ranch where they search for the rhinos and see them doing daily activities like resting or grazing.

Bird watching ziwa

Over 300 bird species are found at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary making it a good bird watching destination. While carrying out bird watching activities in Uganda, Ziwa is a place to look out for. The shoebill is the most sought-after bird within Ziwa and birders can find it at Lugogo Swamp inside the ranch. Bird watching is a guided activity around the gazetted area where rangers who have knowledge about the birds move you around the bush searching for different bird species.

Birding within Ziwa introduces birders to species such as grey crowned crane, African jacana, bateleur, pied kingfisher, cattle egret, African fish eagle, pied kingfisher, Eurasian hobby, African grey hornbill, marabou stork, great blue turaco, lesser kestrel, isabelline shrike, Namaqua dove, plain martin, long-tailed cormorant.

White-bellied tit, tree pipit, steppe eagle, wood sandpiper, white-headed saw wing, wattled lapwing, village indigo bird, superb starling, ross’s turaco, plain martin, olive sunbird, little bittern, lesser kestrel, hadada ibis, green wood hoopoe, curlew sandpiper, booted eagle, black-winged bishop, and African broad bill to mention but a few.

Nature walks in Ziwa

Nature walks are possible in Ziwa where tourists move around the fenced pieced of land looking for different attractions there. Nature walks enable tourists to get so close to nature and the attractions there such as animals, birds, and vegetation. During the nature walks tourists see antelopes, monkeys, vegetation, and different bird species.

Best time to go to Ziwa rhino sanctuary

Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary can be visited all year round however some months are better than others. The dry season months from June to September and December to February are the best time to go to Ziwa rhino sanctuary. There is little rainfall and plenty of sunshine during this period and this makes all the activities enjoyable.

During the dry season, the walking trails are dry and easier to pass through which allows tourists to access most of the park areas. The vegetation is short and scattered and this gives the tourists clear views of most of the attractions within the protected area. Tourists can still use the rainy season to visit Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary but they will find heavy rainfall and plenty of sunshine.

How to get there

Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is located in Nakasongola district and getting there is done by road transport. It takes about 3 hours to get to Ziwa by road and the time taken usually depends on the speed of the driver. From Entebbe, tourists drive through Kampala, Wobulenzi, Luwero, and Nakasongola where they drive to Mukerenge village.
