18 Mar Where is Mount Elgon Where is Mount Elgon? Sometimes referred to as Masaba Mountain, Mount Elgon is found in Africa. Mount Elgon is found in East Africa in two countries Uganda and Kenya. In Uganda, Mountain Elgon is found on the eastern side of the country while in Kenya it’s found on the western side of the country. The mountain is found in Mount Elgon national park a protected area found between the borders of Uganda and Kenya. This Mountain is found between Uganda and Kenya where Uganda takes the bigger portion of the mountain. Mount Elgon is the second tallest mountain in Uganda and the eighth tallest in Africa at 4321 meters above sea level. This mountain is found inside Mountain Elgon national park home to different wildlife species, birds, caves, rocks, and water sources. The mountain is the tallest point in Mountain Elgon national park with the highest peak at 4321 meters above sea level. Wagagai is the tallest peak on Mount Elgon but there are other peaks such as Sudek peak (4302 meters), Koitobos (4222 meters), Mubiyi (4211 meters), and Masaba (4161 meters). As of today, the national park covers a total area of 1110 sq. km on the Uganda side and 196 sq. km on the Kenya side. How to get to the location of Mount Elgon The Mountain can be accessed from Entebbe or Kampala (the main starting point of safaris in Uganda) using road transport. Mountain Elgon is found inside Mountain Elgon national park which is about 24o0 km from Entebbe. By road transport, it takes 5 to 6 hours to get to Mountain Elgon national park where we find Mount Elgon. Tourists from Entebbe are driven through Kampala, Mukono, Jinja, Iganga, and then to Mbale where the park is located. When should one visit Mount Elgon? Hikers and other kinds of tourists can visit the Mountain at any time of the year they feel like however, the dry season is the best time to visit this magnificent mountain. The dry season from June to September and December to February is the best time to hike this Mountain. This is because the months have little rainfall and plenty of sunshine. During the dry season, the hiking trails on this Mountain are dry and easier to walk through, vegetation is short, dry, and scattered giving clear views of attractions and the skies are very clear allowing tourists to see different areas on the mountain as well as the surrounding areas. Hike mountain Elgon during the rainy season from March to May and October to November but they should know that that is the period when the park receives too much rainfall and little sunshine.
