Travelers that intend to do gorilla trekking in Bwindi and want to add on sport fishing will have to contact us via email with the dates of the month and the year they want their safari to happen and these shall first be used to check for the availability of the gorilla permits with Uganda Wildlife Authority.

If the gorilla trekking permits are available, we shall look at all the activities you want and calculate how much it cost you to have this safari. The gorilla permit is got from Uganda Wildlife Authority at a fee of $700 for foreign non-residents, $600 for foreign residents, and UGX250,000 citizens of East Africa. A traveler would also need a sport fishing permit which is $15 for a day and $25 for 4 days.

Gorilla trekking

On this safari, gorilla trekking is done in the famous Bwindi impenetrable forest national park where travelers have an opportunity to trek any of the 19 mountain gorilla families that have been already habituated in the park. Gorilla trekking is done by travelers that are aged 15 years and above in all gorilla parks in the country.

Gorilla trekking activity starts with tourists waking up early in the morning for breakfast and then joining their driver guides to transfer them to the sector offices. At the sector offices, is where all people going for trekking gather and then park wardens teach them the rules and regulations of the gorilla trekking activity. Groups of 8 people are formed and armed ranger guides led each group.

The armed ranger guides led the trek through different trails of the park while protecting trekkers from dangerous wild animals. During the search for mountain gorillas, trekkers do get an opportunity to encounter park mammals, primates, birds, and vegetation. The search for the mountain gorilla family can take 2-7 hours and the time taken depends on the location of the mountain gorilla family as well as the speed of trekkers.

When you are a few meters from the gorilla family, the armed rangers remind you to keep your voices low as you move slowly to the group. When you meet the gorilla family, you are asked to keep about 7 meters away from the gorillas and you will be given 1 hour to be around the members, learn about their gorilla habits, take photos, record videos and watch them do daily activities such as nesting, hunting, playing, coupling and feeding among others.

Batwa community tour: Travelers on a gorilla trekking safari in Bwindi and sport fishing can visit the Batwa communities in Bwindi after a successful gorilla trekking activity. The Batwa people are now living around the park boundaries after the government evicted them from the forest. A visit to the Batwa community is led by the local guides who take you around the boundaries of the park telling you stories of how they used to survive in the jungle and showing you different plants and their use. When you reach the Batwa homes, you will be welcomed by the traditional dancers and then taken around the different homes to see how they live their day to day life. You can be part of the food making where you will taste local food and you will visit their gift shops to see what they make to earn a living.

Nature walks: Nature walks can be done in either Lake Mburo national park or Bwindi impenetrable forest national park and these will give you an opportunity to explore these parks on foot. The nature walks are guided by armed ranger guides who show you the right routes to use and also protect you from dangerous wild animals. The nature walks give you an opportunity to see different mammals, primates, birds, and vegetation in the park.

Game viewing: Game viewing can only be possible in Lake Mburo national park where tourists will get an opportunity to encounter animals such as zebras, lions, impalas, elands, buffaloes, elephants, topis, mongoose, duikers, oribis, reedbuck, hippos, crocodiles, klipspringers, hyenas, and much more. Game drives in Lake Mburo national park are done in the morning, evening, and night where you get to spot nocturnal animals.

Best time to have a gorilla trekking safari in Bwindi and sport fishing

Travelers can have a safari to Bwindi and Lake Mburo national park at any time of the year however there are months that are better than the rest. The dry months are the best to have this safari and they happen from June to September and December to February.  They are characterized by little or no rainfall that keeps the trekking trails dry, the vegetation is short and thin with good views of the mountain gorillas and other wild animals and the roads leading to these parks are in good condition.

Travelers can still visit Bwindi and Lake Mburo for gorilla trekking and sport fishing in the rainy season to enjoy the huge discounts on accommodation facilities. The rainy season however comes with too much rainfall which makes the trekking trails muddy and slippery, the vegetation is short and thin with unclear views of the wild animals and then the roads leading to the park are in poor condition.
