The forest of Mgahinga national park has about 100 mountain gorilla families living on the slopes of Virunga volcanoes Sabyinyo, Gahinga, and Muhabura. The activity starts at Ntebeko Visitors Centre with a briefing about the rules and regulations of the trekking activity. After the briefing, the trekkers not exceeding 8 people are led into the jungle where they start searching for their relatives.

Searching the mountain gorillas goes through different trekking trails and there are chances of meeting different wildlife living in the park, water sources, and vegetation covers. The search goes from minutes to 6 hours but chances of seeing the mountain gorillas of Nyakagezi are always more than 95%.

After hours of searching, you will eventually meet the Nyakagezi mountain gorilla family and armed ranger guides will give you 1 hour to be around the members. This 1 hour is for you to learn about the gorilla behaviors, take images, and watch the members carry out daily activities. Later you trek out of the jungle and drive to Ntebeko Visitors Centre again where you are awarded gorilla trekking certificates.
